In Japan organic farming was practised for many years with the objective of producing food that is safe and free of harmful chemicals and toxic material. But the productivity did not increase for providing adequate food for majority of the population.
Prof.Dr.Teruo Higa a distinguished professor of Horticulture developed the technology of Effective Microorganism in early 80’s at the university of Ryukyus, Okinawa,Japan . He isolated and selected different microorganisms having beneficial effects on soil and plants. And when these micro organisms as a culture was introduced to soil, this improved the soil quality and health which enhanced the growth, yield and quality of crops. Thus EM technology and its practical application were standardised. EM culture do not contain any genetically modified micro organism. EM is made up of mixed culture of microbial species that are found in natural environment.
EM promotes germination, flowering, fruiting and ripening in plants. It improves the physical, chemical, biological environments of the soil and suppresses the soil borne pathogens and pests. It enhances the photosynthetic capacity of crops. It increases the efficacy of organic matter as fertilizer.
In India EM is produced only by Maple Orgtech (India)Ltd. Maple EM-1 is a liquid concentrate of many strains of microorganism which are collected from the natural environment in India. The main micro organisms are Lactobacillus, Photosynthetic bacteria and yeast. Maple EM-1 includes both aerobic and anaerobic species of microbes. Currently EM technology is being used in over 125 countries and in almost every state of India as part of sustainable agriculture programme. Maple EM-1 is a certified organic product and approved by NPOP as INDIAN ORGANIC.
EM technology can be effectively applied in
1.Agriculture
2.Animal Husbandry
3.Aqua culture
4.Mushroom
5.Horticulture
6.Floriculture
7.Enviornment, solid disposal and waste water management.
